Architectural Sojourn in India

Qutab Minar

About India:

India, officially the Republic of India is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second-most populous country, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the west, and the Bay of Bengal on the east, India has a coastline of 7,517 kilometers (4,671 mi). It is bordered by Pakistan to the west; People's Republic of China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north; and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Indonesia in the Indian Ocean.

Home to the Indus Valley Civilization and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. India is a republic consisting of 28 states and seven union territories with a parliamentary system of democracy. It has the world's twelfth largest economy at market exchange rates and the fourth largest in purchasing power. Economic reforms since 1991 have transformed it into one of the fastest growing economies; however, it still suffers from high levels of poverty, illiteracy and malnutrition. A pluralistic, multilingual, and multiethnic society, India is also home to a diversity of wildlife in a variety of protected habitats.

The program:

India has a 2000-year-old rich architectural heritage that spans Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic, and Colonial architecture. In the course of the program, the students will examine this ancient civilization through its traditional and evolving contemporary architecture in its social context. The students will partake in various expeditions to the significant architectural sites located within and around major cities such as New Delhi, Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Jaipur and Jodhpur. The trip will culminate with a visit to an architecture school and a professional design firm in New Delhi where the students will participate in a design charrette with the architecture students and professionals. On their return, they will analyze and present their individual project investigation based on their study and first-hand experiences of Indian architecture.

In most architecture and interior design schools in the US, the students are taught history of architecture from a western perspective. The students receive little or no information regarding the architectural history of South-east Asia. The IAR 499 course coupled with the study abroad trip to India will provide the students a unique insight into India's religious architecture, traditional and contemporary urban architecture, forts, palaces, and monuments.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate a critical awareness and understanding of various architectural styles and periods in India and its impact on the Indian society. The course will prepare the student to evaluate how architecture transforms a society and vice-versa through an analytical process; students will examine ways in which the existing technology of a certain period influenced its architectural expression; and how the shifting political landscape shaped architecture in northern and western India.
