External Scholarships
There are many sources of funding for study abroad beyond what is offered by departments at UNCG. Click on any of the scholarship names or links below for more information. Keep in mind that you should begin your scholarship search and applications early, as many deadlines may be soon after our application deadline.
► Featured Prestigious National and International Scholarships
- Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program: Any student who currently receives a Pell grant as part of their financial aid is eligible to apply for this scholarship to help fund a study abroad program. UNCG students have a strong track record of receiving this award and The Writing Center can help you with your essays.
- ELIGIBILITY: Undergraduate U.S. citizens receiving federal Pell grant
- AMOUNT: $3,000-5,000
- DEADLINE: early March and early October
- RELATED AWARDS:
- Critical Need Language Award: Gilman applicants who plan to study language while abroad can apply for additional funds. Languages currently include Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and more.
- Gilman-McCain Scholarship: $5,000 for child and spousal dependents of active or activated U.S. military personnel. Must be receiving any type of Title IV federal financial aid.
- Boren Awards: This award is specifically for students studying critical languages who are committed to future work with the federal government. Languages currently include Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and more.
- ELIGIBILITY: US. citizens studying abroad outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia or New Zealand
- AMOUNT: $8,000-25,000
- DEADLINE: late January/early February

ASIA
Freeman-ASIA Awards for Study in Asia
A Freeman-ASIA award provides need-based funding to assist the recipient with the cost of the study abroad program and related expenses, including airfare, basic living costs, local transportation, books, etc
- ELIGIBILITY: Undergraduate U.S. citizens or permanent residents with demonstrated financial need studying abroad in East or Southeast Asia
- AMOUNT: $3,000-7,000
- The application deadline is: Tuesday, April 2, 2024
GERMAN
DAAD Scholarships and Grants
- ELIGIBILITY: Undergraduate and graduate students conducting research in Germany
- AMOUNT: varies

ITALY
National Italian American Foundation (NAIF) Murizio A. Gianturco Scholarship
- ELIGIBILITY: For "Italian American" (at least one ancestor emigrated from Italy) students with a 3.5 GPA studying fine arts, liberal arts, language, or architecture in Italy
- AMOUNT: $2,500-12,000
- DEADLINE: March 1
JAPAN
U.S.-Japan Bridging Foundation's Bridging Scholarships:
- ELIGIBILITY: Undergraduate U.S. citizens studying abroad for a semester or year in Japan
- AMOUNT: $2,500 for a semester or $4,500 for an academic year
- DEADLINE: March 15
- ELIGIBILITY: U.S. citizens majoring in Japanese with at least one year of Japanese language study completed
- AMOUNT: 117,000 JPY/month plus airfare
- DEADLINE: varies by consulate (NC is December)
- ELIGIBILITY: Exchange students studying abroad in Japan
- AMOUNT: 80,000 JPY/month
- DEADLINE: host university in Japan requests scholarship from JASSO
SWEDEN
Swedish Woman's Education Association (SWEA) North Carolina Scholarship
- ELIGIBILITY: NC resident studying abroad in Sweden (all genders welcome to apply).
- AMOUNT: up to $1,000
- DEADLINE: June 1
UNITED KINGDOM
British University Transatlantic Exchanges (BUTEX) Scholarship- ELIGILIBITY: Students studying abroad for a semester/year at a BUTEX member institution in the UK.
- AMOUNT: 500 GBP
- DEADLINE: April
► Featured General Study Abroad Scholarships
- Fund for Education Abroad: FEA provides a general scholarship, and coordinates applications for several partners--one application with them allows you to apply for any eligible funds at once. Open to any program that is at least 28 days, and meant for promising undergraduates who demonstrate financial need. NOTE: FEA's application deadline may be earlier than our study abroad application deadline, so plan ahead to apply.
- Rainbow Scholarship: Coordinated by FEA, this scholarship is open to LGBTQ+ students participating in a program of at least 28 days.
- Diversity Abroad: This network provides an array of funding opportunities for students who may be underrepresented in study abroad programs, including minority, first-generation, LGBTQ, low-income, and disabled students.
- Phi Kappa Phi: This $1000 award is open to any undergraduate student at UNCG with a 3.75+ GPA.
- James G. Stemler Scholarship: Alpha Lambda Delta awards 20 scholarships to outstanding undergraduate members to support their educational opportunities as part of study abroad programs. Ten $2,000 scholarships and ten $1,000 scholarships are established to help qualified members offset the costs of studying abroad. Candidates will be considered on the basis of merit.
- Rotary Scholarships: Availability and eligibility vary by district.
- Hendersonville Student Ambassador: Open to students with strong ties to Henderson County, N.C. and whose primary residence is located in the county.
- INSIGHT Into Diversity Scholarship: INSIGHT Into Diversity is committed to improving educational equity for all students, but especially those from underrepresented backgrounds who may not traditionally be afforded the ability or opportunity to participate in a study abroad program. This $2,000 award is open to U.S. citizens from an underrepresented group based on race, ethnicity, LGBTQ, disability, or Veteran status participating on a study abroad program 28 days or longer.
