UNCG Social Work in Northern Ireland

The purpose of the Department of Social Work's study abroad program to Northern Ireland is to acquaint students with the conflict (“troubles”) in the region and the peace and reconciliation movement that has developed in the country in the last twenty-five years. Students will be prepared for this experience through classroom meetings at UNCG where videos, readings, and classroom exercises will assist them in comparing conflict and reconciliation in Northern Ireland and North Carolina. The course culminates in an international experience within a peace and justice center in Northern Ireland (Corrymeela), where students learn practice methods for working with conflict groups that leads to collaboration and reconciliation. Upon returning to UNCG, students will apply the practice methods learned in Northern Ireland to a conflict in their community and present this application to their peers.

Students seeking to learn more about the program should contact
Dr. Mary Anne Busch or Dr. Jacalyn Claes.
